{{code}} Keeping home theater sound out of the rest of the house requires three things: mass (heavy, layered walls and solid-core doors), decoupling (structures that do not touch, so vibration cannot travel), and sealing (closing every air gap, since sound follows air). Acoustic foam panels do not soundproof a room. They improve the sound inside it, but bass passes straight through them into the bedrooms above.
This is the most common confusion we encounter. Treatment, meaning panels and bass traps, shapes how the room sounds to you. Soundproofing, meaning isolation, controls what escapes. A room can sound superb inside and still rattle the kitchen; fixing that means changing the structure, not adding foam.
Mass. Sound weakens as it forces heavy things to vibrate. Double layers of drywall with a damping compound, such as Green Glue, between them outperform any single layer. The door matters most: a hollow-core door undoes an otherwise good wall. Use solid-core, with perimeter seals and an automatic door bottom.
Decoupling. Bass travels through the frame of the house. Resilient channel or isolation clips separate the drywall from the studs; in serious builds, a room-within-a-room floats a new frame inside the old one. Even isolating the subwoofer from the slab with a platform helps upstairs rooms noticeably.
Sealing. Sound leaks wherever air does, through recessed lights, outlets, HVAC ducts and the gap under the door. Back-boxes on electrical penetrations, acoustic caulk at every joint, and lined, routed ductwork close the paths. HVAC deserves real design attention: the theater needs generous, quiet airflow, not a straight duct that doubles as a speaking tube to the hallway.
Full isolation is a construction project, best done when a room is being built or gutted, which is why we design theaters alongside our clients' remodels and rebuilds. In an existing room, meaningful gains come cheaper: upgrade the door and seals first, often the single biggest audible improvement per dollar, add a second damped drywall layer on the shared wall, isolate the subwoofer, and set a sensible late-night volume preset. You will not reach cinema-grade isolation, but movie upstairs, conversation downstairs is an achievable target.
