Walk through a well-integrated home and you will notice what is missing: no cable boxes under televisions, no tangle of HDMI leads behind the credenza, no three-remote ritual to watch a game. Every display in the house, from the living room to the gym, the guest suite and the outdoor terrace, is a clean panel on the wall, and any of them can show anything: the Apple TV, the cable receiver, the surveillance cameras, the media server. That is whole-home video distribution, and it is one of the most transformative and least talked-about parts of a proper AV installation in a Los Angeles home.
The idea: sources in one place, pictures everywhere
Instead of stacking equipment beneath each television, all source devices live together in a ventilated equipment rack, whether a closet, a corner of the garage, or a purpose-built AV room. From there, video travels over the home's wiring to every display. The televisions on the wall need exactly two things: power and one cable back to the rack.
The benefits compound.
- Clean rooms. No shelves of electronics in the bedroom or boxes glowing in the theater.
- Any source, any screen. Start a film in the family room, finish it in the bedroom, or send the gate camera to the kitchen TV when the bell rings.
- Fewer boxes overall. Two or three shared streamers can serve eight TVs, rather than one device per screen.
- One place to service. When something needs attention, it is in the rack, not behind furniture in four different rooms.
Matrix switch or video-over-IP?
Two architectures dominate, and the right choice depends on the size of the system. An HDMI matrix switch is a dedicated box with source inputs and display outputs, say 8x8, routing any input to any output over HDBaseT wiring. It is proven, fast to switch and well-suited to small and mid-sized systems. Its limits are fixed: outgrow the port count and you replace the unit.
Video-over-IP (AVoIP) sends each source onto the home network through encoders, and any display with a decoder can tune in, over the same category cable or fiber the network already uses. It scales by adding endpoints rather than replacing a switch, handles very large homes gracefully, and integrates naturally with modern 10-gigabit network backbones. For estates with many displays, this is where the industry has settled. It also demands a properly engineered network, which is why video distribution and network design should be planned by the same team.
What it means for your wiring plan
If a remodel or new build is in your future, this is a walls-open decision. Each display location needs at minimum one category cable home-run to the rack, and two plus conduit is our standard, since conduit converts any future format change into a cable pull rather than a drywall project. The rack location needs power, cooling and space to grow. None of this is expensive while framing is exposed; all of it is disruptive later.
Control is the final ingredient. A distributed system without unified control just moves the confusion to a different room. With a Savant or Control4 interface, one remote per room selects sources by name, such as Cameras, Apple TV or Game Console, and the switching, audio routing and display power happen invisibly.
Where it fits in an LA home
The pattern suits the way large Westside homes actually run: a screening room and a family room sharing sources; televisions in the gym, office and guest house that nobody wants to stack equipment under; an outdoor TV on the loggia fed from indoors, with nothing weather-exposed but the panel itself.
