Wired or Wireless Security Cameras: Which Should You Install?

For a home you own and intend to stay in, wired cameras are the better choice in almost every case. They record continuously rather than waking on motion, they perform far better in low light because they are not rationing power, and they do not need charging or replacing every few months. Wireless and battery cameras earn their place in rentals, in positions where no cable can reach, and as temporary coverage during construction. The decision is less about the camera itself than about what you need it to do at two in the morning.

What actually separates the two

The words wired and wireless get used loosely, so it is worth being precise. A fully wired camera receives both power and network over a single ethernet cable, an arrangement called Power over Ethernet. A battery camera has no cable at all and communicates over your Wi-Fi. In between sits a third category that is often mislabeled wireless, where the camera is plugged into a nearby power outlet but sends video over Wi-Fi.

That middle category inherits most of the weaknesses of both approaches. It still depends on Wi-Fi reaching a point outside your walls, which is exactly where signal is weakest, and it still requires a cable, just a less useful one. If a cable is going to be run anyway, running the right cable costs very little more.

Why battery cameras miss the moment that matters

A battery camera spends most of its life asleep, because staying awake would exhaust it in days. It wakes when a sensor detects motion, then connects, then begins recording. That sequence takes between one and three seconds on a good day, and longer when the Wi-Fi signal is marginal.

Someone walking briskly past your side gate covers a considerable distance in three seconds. The resulting clip frequently starts with a figure already leaving the frame, which is precisely the footage that turns out to be useless when it is needed. A wired camera is recording continuously, so the event and the twenty seconds before it are both on the recorder.

Battery life is the second issue and it is more mundane. Manufacturers quote months, and in a quiet position that can be accurate. On a busy driveway that triggers dozens of times a day, in a Los Angeles summer where heat reduces battery performance, real life is considerably shorter. A camera that is flat is not a camera.

Night performance is where the gap widens

Useful night footage requires either a good infrared illuminator or a sensor sensitive enough to work with ambient light, and both consume power. A camera running on a battery has to be conservative with each, which is why battery camera night footage so often shows a bright blur near the lens and darkness beyond it.

A wired camera has continuous power and can drive proper illumination, hold a slower shutter without dropping frames, and run a larger sensor. The practical difference is whether you can identify a face and read a license plate, or merely confirm that something moved. Most break ins happen in darkness, so this is not a marginal consideration.

Where the footage lives, and why it matters

Battery and Wi-Fi cameras are generally built around a cloud subscription, and in many cases the camera does very little without one. That means an ongoing cost, and it means your footage sits on someone else's server under terms that can change.

Wired systems are usually built around a recorder inside your own home, sized for several weeks of continuous history. The footage is yours, it keeps recording when the internet drops, and there is no monthly fee to keep your own cameras working. Cloud backup can be added deliberately if you want off site copies, which is a sensible belt and braces approach for the front entry, rather than a requirement for the system to function at all. When wireless is genuinely the right answer

Renting is the clearest case. If you cannot drill into the structure, a battery camera at the entry door is far better than nothing, and it leaves with you. Temporary coverage during a remodel or a rebuild is another, where the site changes weekly and permanent cabling would be wasted.

The third case is a position that no cable can practically reach, such as a detached structure across a lot with no conduit, where trenching would cost more than the coverage is worth. Even then the honest comparison is against a wired camera on the nearest reachable point, angled to cover the same approach. It is often possible.

What running the cable actually involves

Homeowners frequently assume that wiring means opening walls, and in a finished house that is usually not the case. Most runs travel through the attic, down an exterior wall cavity, or through a crawl space, emerging at a small penetration behind the camera itself. In a single story home in the Valley, or a house with an accessible attic, a full camera installation typically involves no visible disruption inside at all.

The runs that need thought are long ones, particularly to a gate at the end of a driveway. Ethernet is reliable to about 100 meters, and beyond that we use a fiber run or an intermediate powered point. This is also where a well built home network pays for itself, because cameras are only ever as dependable as the infrastructure behind them.

How many cameras, and where they belong

Most homes are well covered by four to eight cameras, placed deliberately rather than distributed evenly. The positions that consistently earn their place are the front entry, the driveway approach, each side gate or path along the property line, and the rear elevation where it faces open ground. Interior cameras are usually unnecessary in a home that is occupied, and they raise privacy questions that are worth thinking about before installing.

The common mistake is buying a package of six identical cameras and mounting them where the walls are convenient. Coverage is a design question. Are wireless security cameras any good?

They are good at what they are designed for, which is quick, temporary, or rental friendly coverage. They are weaker at continuous recording, night performance, and reliability over years, which is what most homeowners actually want from a permanent system.

Do wired cameras still work if the internet goes down?

Yes. Recording continues to the local recorder because it does not depend on an internet connection. You lose remote viewing on your phone until the connection returns, but no footage is lost.

Do I need a monthly subscription?

Not with a locally recorded system. The recorder in your home stores the footage and there is no fee to access your own cameras. Cloud backup is available as an option if you want an off site copy.

Will installing cameras damage my walls?

In most homes the cable runs through the attic or a wall cavity and the only penetration is a small hole behind each camera. Where a clean route genuinely does not exist, we tell you before starting rather than improvising.
